Early Spring Bass Fishing?
I live in southeast Alabama, Georgia, South Western. . . I have a tournament on West Point Lake next Saturday. . . I went with a buddy and do not get a bite last Sunday. . . The water temperature was 49-50 degrees last Sunday. . . We have had several mid-low 70 degree days this past week and next week we will be mid to low 60's all week. . . do you think the weather will be past the bass have started to move? What do you think of water, I should find the fish? West Point principal structure rocks, points and humps (road bed). . . I quit fish this lake a bit, but never so early. . . some help would be great. . . I am planning with a shaky head worm, Carolina rig, crank baits, rattling jig and a band? Will cover this? Please share. . . Thanks. . . I have a Black and Blue 1/2oz jig with a black trailer. . . West Point is a man made lake, only when their electricity is really no current. . . and she never seems to "pull" water "at the weekend. . . There are a lot of Spotted Bass in this lake. . . Last Sunday I was really worried. . . I hope the water temps are in the mid 50s. . . and it sucks that it does not really speak to docks, so I can not fall back, which is for docks for a border. . . a dock that I wore it to May of last year, I fished on Sunday with not even a bump. . .

A good thing you might want to use is a rattle trap. Also, think about breaking out the purple salamanders. You have a tied on jig, so what color are you using, I think the best thing around this time is going to be the white curly tails. Find a nice eddy and fish it. Since there are lots of rocks a brown colored worm is usually pretty good.
Unless the water gets a little warmer than 50 I would leave the rattle trap alone. But if it get close to 54, look for shad and throw it.
Chrome/black back 1/2oz.
Now for rocks, rip rap and such jig or 1/2oz single Colorado blade spinner bait in blk/blu. Do not be afraid to put a 10″ (Berkley power worm blk flake) on that jig.
Never leave out the possibility of using a jerk bait, one that will suspend at lest 10′, but water will have to be pretty clear for the JB to work sense it is a sight bait.
Other than that fish bluff walls that tapper into points, with creek channel near by, bends in main creek channel where it meets a secondary channel. Make sure and check the mouth of bays where you know fish spawn. If you lake has any off shore humps do not over look those either. Don’t over look slow rolling a spinner bait either.
Your lake sounds like my home lake. You have to depend on drops, creek channels & points.
Sounds like you have a plan already, just don’t get locked into and make sure and be aware of where and how you catch them, so you may possibly set a pattern. Remember to pay close attention to a possible pattern within a pattern.
Good Luck and have fun.
i like using soft plastic lizards Texas rigged during spring. slowly reel it in sliding across the bottom. lizards eat bass eggs so spawning bass will attack it if it’s anywhere near their nest.
Wacky worm baby!
I currently live in MN and have to fish cold, clear, water almost 2/4 of the fishing season.
Of course the Bass in your area may not act and react like the ones in MN, but maybe this info can help ya…?
Last fall, (right before the lake iced over/37-40 degree water), I went Bass fishing looking for live weeds on a shelf or drop-off near long flats, (in 12-14FT of water). Me and my partner fished the N-NW area of the lake because that is usually the warmest prt of the lake because it is sheltered from the harsh Northern fronts that move through.
I tried all the things that I thought would work , (1/4 OZ jig/curly-tail, suspending jerk-baits, 4″ Senko’s rigged Wacky, Storm curly-tailed swimbait, 1/4 OZ Jig/YUM Crawbug, Etc.), and then I began experimenting.
I have a large assortment of tackle to experiment with……lol.
Anywho, for sh*ts & giggles I tied on a holographic 1/4 OZ Rattle Trap thinking,”This ain’t gonna work”.
Sure enough it did!
I was amazed!
My retrieve was why, though. I let the RT sink almost to the bottom of the live weeds I found, then slowly swept the rod up, (just enough to get a “rattle”). The Bass hit it on the sweep up, (which is odd because usually they would hit it on the fall). I guessed they thought my RT was an escaping, distressed, shiner fleeing from the weedline. Between me and my partner we caught 6 Bass to about 3LB’s and 5 (or 6/ can’t remember), Northern Pike.
All in all it was a productive 4 hour day of fishing………(esp for such cold water).
By the way, we were using Power Pro 2/10 line on spinning tackle.
We put Kick N Bass attractant on every 4th cast.
And worked areas with LONG casts, (A 1/4 OZ RT will cast VERY far using 2 LB test diameter; which helped us cover water quickly and find active fish quicker). In my opinion, I think it’s important to be 30yrds from any structure you plan on fishing in such cold water with pressured fish.
Obviously, your water will be warmer than 35 degrees, but it goes to show you that reaction-strike lures can still be productive in super cold water if retrieved in a “Yo-Yo” fashion.
Well, hope this helps somehow..? Thumbs to everyone. Good luck in the T !
Them bass this time of year are holding deep, try fishing a spinnerbait or wacky-rigged worm, deep and slow. Try dark colors, purple, motor oil, black, etc. I wouldn’t recommend the crankbait or rattletrap (Lipless crank.) for winter, or when the temps are low. Try a slow presentational spinnerbait, jig or worm. Those could be all the choices.
For the spinnerbait, Booyah makes some good ones as we all know, so why not recommend them? Grab some senko’s and Strike King jig’s, and you’re ready for one hell of a ride!!!
Remember, you can never fish too slow.
Hope i helped ya out.
